Help with OBD readers

OK, I've posted a few times asking questions about obd readers, but I'm still a bit confused.

I don't have an OBD2 port. I have the 38 pin socket under the bonnet.

Does anyone know if the 38 pin socket is OBD2 compatible?

I'm looking at the 38 pin to OBD2 conversion cables available on ebay. Then buying a generic code reader.

Will this work?

I'm all confused

i dont think that Euro marketed cars were required to have OBDII compliant ports until 2001.
i also dont know where AUS ranked in terms of this requirement (mandatory year). so it is
possible that your car really doesn't have it at all.

Yes the OBD codes are available on the 38pin connector used by the MB SDS. I would definitely look for a complete system (adapter cable/reader). Buying bits and pieces off eBay may or may not work.

Ok, just to be clear.

I do not have the obd port under the steering column.

I only have the 38 pin connector under the bonnet

I believe this is obd1.

So, is an obd2 reader able to work with this port?

Or do I need to get something else.

Ok, thanks for that.

So obviously an obd2 reader (with an adaptor cable) will not work.

I think I read somewhere this is a can port.

Not sure what you're on about.

I'm just trying to work out what I need to read faults.

Think I'm there now
