E320 ROUGH IDLE ISSUE? HELP?!

I Have a 1999 e320 with 223000 miles. Had motor mounts replaced right away i noticed a slight shake to my car.Couldnt figure it out because i just replaced the motor mounts (beck arnley). So i took it to the mercedes dealer thinking they would solve the issue. There report said there was a code for IAT sensor,engine smoothness was high? cylinder 5 was the highest?. The service advisor said my engine was misfiring, and cylinder 5 and 3 mainly but also all over.

He said i can probaly get away with just replacing cylinder 5 wires. Well i replaced all plugs with fr8dd33 plugs,brand new bosch wires and i replaced all coils from a local junkyard. while all that helped the shake, it didnt fix it! NO CEL Its a light very noticeable shake can be felt throughout car also when i open side doors you can see door shake up and down. Car drives good lots of power i guess. Had catalylitic converter reaplced a while back with universal one? IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE I CAN CHECK WITH SIMPLE TOOLS MYSELF THAT MIGHT CAUSE THAT KIND OF SHAKE?

OI forgot to mention i did replace the IAT sensor as well ,ran better and was better on gas

maybe ur harmonic balancer, water pump could be going out, check ur pullys

Which is the harmonic balancer pulley? I know the lowest pulley towards the right side of the engine has the plastic in the center wearing out like torn. The manual says its the a/c compressor. As for the water pump my car has never overheated but i do feel it gets hot.
can the water pump cause engine car to shake?

the bearings wear out and it gets a wabble but u usually start loosing coolant from the front but the harmonic is prolly the rustiest pully conected to the crank ussually the lowest pully and right in the middle but with that many miles id say that may be it

how serious is the harmonic balancer? how much would it cost to fix? i heard there was a recall on these cars for it? how would it affect engine performance? Thanks

your crank is balanced when they put it in but once its in the short block its not balance perfectly.

its like a flywheel on a clutch, spining weight to make sure everything runs smooth

idk how much one would cost for a mb but for a 350 chevy its nothing more then 100$ for oem replacment but the upgraded ones there like 500+


aka pretty important need fixed fast wouldnt drive the car until u figure out what it is because u could ruin bearings and seals with the motor being unbalanced

yea but i cant tell which one it is the lowest biggest one is the crankshaft pulley right. i dont see anything else there. theres 7 pulleys.is it part of the crankshaft? all the other pulleys are accounted for, the manual doesnt say anything bout the harmonic balancer

ahh ok thats what i thought , its the biggest pulley. i dont really see anything wrong with mine.what would i be looking for though to see if its bad.

I haven't heard of harmonic balancers failing like this. They usually just brak and damage nearby parts. Address your misfiring issues first. If all cylinders are misfiring, consider the MAF.

What type of air filters are you using? Also pick up a can of CRC MAF cleaner. Disconnect the actual MAF from the housing and spray it down. I do this every time I clean my K&N filters as part of maintenance. (every 10k)

Right now im using stock oem mann filter i think. i had a K & N air filter ran better but then i got a IAT sensor code, service advisor said it was probaly cuz of the filter so i went back to a new original one. Replaced maf/iat sensor,all coils, brand new wires and plugs.

One thing i did notice was the plugs i took out were slightly longer then then the ones i put in. The ones that came out were bosch f8dd33+ the ones i put were bosch fr8dd33+ . Another thing is the new plugs gap is .40 and the manual says it should be gapped at .39 would that make any difference?

Something funky is going on w/your spark plugs mate. OEM spark plugs come pre-gapped

Did you check autohaus for correct spark plug. (OEM)

yea they were pre gapped at .40, but the manual says the gap should be at .39. i guess they are the stock replacement from what i been told. does that make a difference

one one-hundredth on the plug gap will not make a difference. Do you still get misfire codes?

I have to get it checked again. Am thinking about getting the mb star diagnostic tool to see really whats up. i just know im getting the same symptoms as before just not as bad. engine shake, hesitation and like sputtering. thanks for everyones input.
