Engine Temp Gauge Off

My engine temperature gauge is acting a bit crazy. When the engine is started, it is down low where it needs to be. Then, as the engine warms up to about 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius), the gauge on the dash jumps all the way up like it is at full hot. My mechanic connected a reader inline to the sensor between it and the computer, and the temperature is accurate. So it appears there is something in the computer, dash gauge, or in between that is messaged up.

Any ideas?

2002 E55.

Thanks,

Tom

On most cars (not sure about ours) that's also the least expensive and easiest fix, so best to try it first.
