You have self leveling suspension...it uses the same fluid as the steering rack.

I saw this message when a rear line to my SLS burst. At the same time the steering became incredibly stiff.

So, the problem could be with the steering or the SLS.

Take a look for leaks around the PS reservoir. If the leak is from the rear connection, it could just be an O-ring.

The SLS uses a special fluid and a common reservoir for both the PS and rear suspension. The fluid part number is located on the reservoir cap. The reservoir is located on the left side of engine bay between the windshield washer fluid reservoir and the headlight.

As others have noted, it's important to find any leaks. Also, the failure of one of the accumulators will cause a sudden drop in fluid level with no evidence of a leak. This often results in a harsh ride.

It says on the lid of the reservoir. Just go to an MB dealer.

Note that NAPA carries the PS fluid, manufactured by Febi.

You may have solved this issue already but we carry fluid from Genuine Mercedes-Benz, Pentosin, Febi and Fuchs. You may review the fluids here.
