2001 E320 Steering locked - help
My car is a 2001 E320 with a smart key (with a battery). My key doesn't move in the ignition nor does the steering wheel. This is the first occurrence of the problem. Never had any issues in the past. I have 160,000 miles on the car.
I have seen references to solutions but can't see a clear procedure mentioned anywhere. I am not very savvy with car mechanics. Is this a problem that I need to tow my car to a Mercedes service?

on rare occasion, the central locking system simply goes belly up but I'm hoping
that more Q&A back and forth my eliminate this (which can be upwards of $1k)
but based on the few clues you've given, it isn't sounding like an easy fix.
...yet unable to complete the handshaking with the central locking system.
for the hell of it, put the key in the ignition and leave it there for a few hrs.
another hell-of-it, do same but turn to position "1", cook dinner
i'd still feel better if you can confirm battery health directly such as reporting
car battery voltage at rest or under load, rather than relying on secondary
observations (lights, battery).
