Need help with my radio 1998 E320
Help! My radio volume is stuck on high. I heard this is a common problem with this particular radio. I think it is a Becker 1692. Can anyone tell me who I can get to repair it or should I just get another one. Thanks for any advise.

Some people have had success by spraying contact cleaner in and around the volume control knob. For best results, remove the radio and take off the cover. You can also send the radio to Becker Autosound in NJ. They will either fix your radio and return it or send you an exchange unit -- your choice. If used to be about $150.

Radio Shack Anti Corrosive Spray (part #64-057) sells for $7.50. Contains DeOxit which is a superior contact cleaner and rejuvenates electrical contacts. We use DeOxit from Caig Industries ,the manufacturer. Their product sells for $20 at Frys. Because it repairs the contact and is conductive DO NOT TURN RADIO ON until completely dry to avoid short circuits. At least 20 minutes depending on temp and humidity. It works really well and is worth a try. That being said, I replaced my Becker with an after market unit with Bluetooth. It will sound better and allow you to use your cell phone hands free. There are posts about self install and steering wheel control. Before spending $150 for repair or replace I would investigate buying a more modern unit.

The volume knob on my '98 E430 got flaky (could not consistently adjust the volume) and a radio shop told me to take it to a dealer. Their solution was to order a refurbished one from MB and sent mine in for the core charge. That was before I knew better and it was pretty expensive. I would definitely follow the earlier advice and try to clean the contacts behind the knob.
