Xenon Beam Pattern
I have searched around for pictures in regards to the light pattern output for stock xenon. I have attached mine here to see if my pattern is on par with others.
The pattern output is not as crisp as I would expect with the understanding these are not projectors. So thoughts are appreciated.
I am trying to decide whether I need to replace the bulbs.

That looks about right. Mine look just like that. Replacement bulbs are cheap tho, I changed mine to 8k and since its just the bulb it was around 15 dollars. Stock ballasts and wiring can be used.

Standard bulbs are about $20-25 but Xenon's are about $75.
There is a procedure in the OM (MY1998) on how to adjust the headlights. I posted a thread either here or on benzworld on how to do the test. You need a level space next to a wall where you can back up at least 25 feet.

I guess it seems like the light output is different. The light on the right puts thinner light out and is dimming purple so I think it is an older bulb than the left. So i guess the swoops upwards right is the way it should be?
Ill look into the headlight aiming. It seems like at a distance the left is low and right at a distance.
Also how do you know when the headlight auto adjust function works properly?

Not sure on auto-adjust -- never tried to check it.
Here's the procedure. A few people thought it sounded difficult but maybe my explanation is too detailed (more so than necessary?). Once you try it, it seems easy.

I believe someone (raymond?) posted a pdf version of the 98 manual on that site. There are a couple of related diagrams you might find useful. Pgs. 121-124.

when you turn the castle knobs sticking out above the headlight housing, you
should be able to see the beam shift up/down or left/right
be sure the ground is level and at least a car length or two back from the wall
google for various headlight adjustment tips
yes, the color differential may point to aging bulb. to test, you can swap bulbs
from one side to the other. if the color follows the swap, it's the bulb. if the
color remains unchanged on the one side, the ballast is likely to be the source
of the imbalance.
if you have stock headlight, you're looking for D2R replacement bulb. you can
also consider buying in pairs to ensure color balance (if you're really picky, verify
same lot number stamped on the bulb). you can save the existing bulbs as
spares for when one dies suddenly.

To check auto-adjust functionality, place the key in the ignition. Turn the headlamps on. Turn the key to position 2. You will hear the motor that adjusts the headlamp kick in, and the lamps will lower then raise back up. This happens quickly, and if you are not watching you will miss it.
