light question

Is thier a way to turn off the fog lights? That stay on when you shut off the engine and get out of the car and close the door.

Cars are a 98 E320 and 00 E430.

Thank you

Is the normal (rotating) switch for the fogs, next to the ignition key hole not working? That should be your switch for the fogs. Man, have you had your fogs on all this time?

HUH! Whitey, what are you talking about? No W210 Fog Light switch is next to ignition key.

I was told you couldn't do it when I inquired with my MB mechanic. He said they will always come on after you turn your headlights off and close the door. If anyone figures out a way around this, please let us know.

Pretty sure you'll need the dealer to override that through the ECU if they will do it for you. This is a 'security' feature direct from the factory, so most likely they won't (unless you really know your mechanic).

This is really bugging me guys, you're telling me the fogs can't be switched on and off manually in the US versions? It is part of the headlight switch (regardless of whether it is next to the ignition or not). I can turn on and off my fogs anytime I like by pulling it out and pushing it back in to turn off, just like the other lights - don't you have it?

On the 2002 the Lights

From the manual regarding Fog lights and Security Illumination:

Note:
-------
With the electronic key removed and the driver’s door
open, a warning sounds and the message “SWITCH OFF
LIGHTS!” in the multifunction indicator appears if the
vehicle’s exterior lamps (except standing lamps) are not
switched off.

Fog lamps will operate with the parking lamps and/or
the low beam headlamps on. Fog lamps should only be
used in conjunction with low beam headlamps. Consult
your State or Province Motor Vehicle Regulations
regarding allowable lamp operation.
Fog lamps are automatically switched off when the
exterior lamp switch is turned to position D.

Night security illumination
--------------------------------
When exiting the vehicle after driving with the exterior
lamps on, they switch on again for added illumination
for approximately 30 seconds after closing the last door.
The lamp-on time period can be changed at your
Mercedes-Benz Center.

Attached are pictures from the manual.

Thanx EddieGTP, that explains it (and answers Mr Kato's query) but fact is, I don't have the "Night Security Illumination" feature so no lights on problem ......maybe only needed in the US, errr ,where you guys haven't invented street lamps yet?????

No, you don't understand.....

Regardless of any switch or anything for that matter, when the ignition has been turned off and the driver drive opened thus closed, the parking lights and fog lights come on for 40 seconds? as a safety feature.

I know the '99 MY has this enabled with so that at least when you lock the car, they shut off.... Not so on the 96,96,98?

Now I'm more confused Mich - you're typing like Alex, LOL!

My lights are solely operated by the switches and don't turn themselves on no matter what you do........ lock, unlock whatever you're tyring to say........IMO, this feature would be a pain in the a$$ and a drain on the battery.

I'm pretty sure its a country specific feature, just like the Canadian feature. I've never seen any E's in my town with their lights on after the driver locks them up...let me check my manual to see if its anything like Eddie's........

I believe it's only on US models as I have never come across a W210 that doesn't have this "Night Security Illumination." Oh well, I guess we'll have to live with it. It's like a Cadillac except on the Cadillac you can set how long you would like your headlights to remain illuminated after exiting and locking up the vehicle.

......like those ugly side lights on the front bumper, smaller indent on the hood and no fender blinkers . Sorry folks!

Jimmy, you can reset it - just take her to a stealer as the manual says , maybe you can set it to "0" secs............

I don't have fender blinkers, I have blinking mirrors (much nicer IMO). I also don't have bumper lights anymore thanks to Carlsson. No offense of course...As for the smaller indent on the hood, what are you talking about ? Am I missing something or just having a brain fart???

Duh, I know what Hank has and I'm not bragging about the bumper Davey, lol. I can't put chrome tips on unless I replace the bumper. The pipes face down and I would have to do some cutting into my bumper to make anything fit. I am going to wait to have some more cash and go with a full exhaust system...
