Strange problems with 01 E320

Hello all,
I'm having some very strange problems with my 2001 E320. First off, it has randomly died on me twice in the past week sitting at a traffic light. No warning, no engine sputter, it just shut off. It starts up immediately after shutting off and runs fine. It almost feels like it's one of the new e classes with the "start stop" function.... I just replaced the air filter with the STP brand filter about a month ago, and the MAF was replaced about a year and a half (OEM), or about 15,000 miles ago.

Now today another strange problem. The car randomly shifted into neutral and would not go into drive. The gear shifter was in the drive position, and the letter 'D' was displayed on my instrument cluster but the car was behaving like it was in neutral. It shifted fine into reverse and park. I had to wait about 10 minutes and restart the car a few times before it would engage in drive. I haven't noticed any fluids leaking at all.

For both problems there have been no warnings. No check engine light or warning lights of any kind. I have almost 100k miles on The car and it runs great other than these 2 issues. Could they be related? Any suggestions? Thanks!

First I would check all battery conections and grounds, and check battery as well.

The battery is an unlikely cause, since the car will run without the battery being connected.

Thanks guys for your help.

I tried resetting the computer, and a former MB mechanic advised me to check the camshaft position sensor to see if it was loose. It wasn't, and I don't think there's much more I can do or have time to do.

Probably just going to have to suck it up and take her to MB $$$$

Hey guys, Just got her back from MB. They replaced the Transmission Control Unit and transmission fluid and she seems to be doing better than before. However, they said that the problem of the car randomly dying is not related to this. And since I've picked her up shes died on me a couple of times sitting at a red light.

I was advised by a former MB mechanic that it could be the camshaft position sensor, but doing my own research I found it could also be the crankshaft position sensor? Are they the same thing?

Also, I can't find where it, or they, are located in a 01 W210. If anybody has pictures that would be incredible. I can't seem to view some pictures posted in other formus.

Thanks!
