2001 E320 front seat compatibilty

Hello,

Hoping someone can help here or point me to a discussion if it exists.

I have a 2001 E320 and the driver seat bottom cushion heater does not work.
I came across someone parting out a 1996 E320 which had a front seat that was fully functional.

However when I installed it nothing worked. No seat adjustment, no heat, and the steering tilt did not function either.

I re-installed the original and all was good (sans bottom heat)

I was told that most parts from 96 to 2001 were compatible. Is this not the case?

Thank you.

Not sure I understand your question.
Are you asking why didn't I just repair the non functioning bottom heater?
It seemed a lot easier to just replace the seat. Plus I have no idea how to repair a broken heater.

Thank you for your non helping answers.
The seat works, just not in my car.
My question was about the compatibility of the 96 seat in a 01 car.

If you are in the US, it is free to access EPC. You can cross reference the part numbers and check for compatibility. This is the only way to know for sure if the seats and controls are compatible.

may not help much, but I had take off seats from an 02 E55 slipped into my 99 E320 successfully. it did require SDS interfacing to introduce the PSE pump to
the air bladders in the seats. otherwise, i'm reasonably sure it did not need any
coding work for the electrical - plug n play as far as I know. someone did the
job but i was there observing the whole time

It could be that there were changes to the CAN bus version between 1996 and 2001 which might explain the issues. Part number comparisons don't always work since part numbers can be changed for other reasons. But as mentioned, EPC-online could be useful.

I have heard there is something similar for Europe so you might want to check into it. You might want to see if you can get a one day subscription to WIS. It's about $18. That should also include access to the EPC.

There have been threads about replacing the seat heating element. Might be your best solution.
