How to decipher codes? E300 Diesel, Engine Electronics light
Hi
I have a 1997 E300 diesel with 155,000.
The "check engine, engine electronics" light/message came on.
Is there a way to determine the code without bringing it in to a shop?
Can it be done without a code reader?
I'm not sure why it came on and I don't want to guess at it and change parts unnecessarily.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If you don't want to spend thirty bucks on a cheap throw away scannar to find the faults---then an excellent alternative would be to get a new engine. Both jobs can be done at home!!

You can go to a local parts store and they will likely read the code for you for free, hoping that you will buy the part needed from them. The code will not really tell you what to buy, but will tell you where to look for the problem.
