Check Enigne light, rough idle HELP!

MB world help please. Driving home driving my E320 and hit the gas to merge, and the car faltered, and went from accelerating to slow muffled driving. The car starting loosing power and sounded like a blocked cat kid off. As I pulled over the next 1/2 mile the car lost more power and could not go over 20mph.The engine was idling really rough , shaking and such. I got it home and when I started it idles perfect, but as soon as you give it gas it starts misfiring. I jacked it up ant the passenger side exhaust is hot but you can grab it with a glove on. The drivers side is as expected hot as hell! So my thought is possible clogged cat, or bad tensioner / timing chain. Please help, any thoughts MB World?

if you have the CHECK ENGINE light on, why wouldn't you simply have the codes
checked so that you can narrow down your options? the car's sensors are
already alerting you to possible causes.

I am not nearly as knowledgable as many on here, but I would suspect a blocked catalytic converter.
