2000 E430 Speedo and outside temp dim

I have looked for several answers to this specific vehicle , but is there a place to order a new display for odometer gauge and outside temp? The display is very dim , is not a bulb issue because it is an led type display. Is there replacements avail other than MB dealer? Is it a job an new inexperienced backyard mech can do?

These displays are LCDs backlit by bulbs. If the display is dim, you have bulbs out. If there is no display then most likely the cables are damaged. If you have pixels missing, then this is a cable issue as well. The LCD displays themselves rarely go bad. The temp, and gear indicator/time displays each have 1bulb. Odometer if I remember correctly has 4. These are cheap enough at the dealer unless you can fulfill a minimum order with one of the online parts houses and get free shipping. Start with the easy first. Pull the IC and check the bulbs.

yaahoos,

You cannot buy a new display for this from Mercedes-Benz. The instrument cluster comes as a complete assembly.

The good new is that this is indeed a bulb issue. The display is not LED, but actually a backlit LCD. If you search the forum, you will find numerous posts about bulb replacement in the instrument cluster, such as this one.

You will need the Instrument Cluster Removal Tools in order to remove the cluster to get to the bulbs. You can get to the instrument cluster removal tool on our site by clicking HERE, or by clicking on the photo below.

Once you remove the instrument cluster, you will see the bulbs on the back. The bulbs for the LCD panels are usually the 12 Volt - 1.3 Watt type with the green base. They are available on our site HERE, or by clicking on the photo below.

In some cases, you will also run into the 12 Volt - 1.5 Watt bulbs with the beige base. We also have these available, and you can get to them by clicking HERE, or by clicking on the photo below.

If there is anything I can help out with, please feel free to post or send a PM!

I would order the tool but $33 for shipping to Canada is a bit much right now. Thx for all the info though, very helpful.
