Very easy.
Unclip the plastic headlamp housing from inside the engine compartment, and move it out of the way enough to pull out the lamp and socket (after it too has been unclipped from its mount).
Simply remove the bulb from the socket, and replace with a new one. Try not to touch the new bulb with your skin, as the oils from your hand can lead to shortened bulb life. A new OEM bulb will cost you around $7. You probably want to change them both at the same time, as the other lamp will probably fail very soon too.

There are directions in the owners manual. Did you try that and were unsuccessful. I've done it a couple of times and the directions work but the clips are stubborn.

While you have the airbox off, you should cut out the honeycomb filter that is is the crossover tube. It will help with airflow. Oh yeah, you should put in a K&N too, while your at it.

for the xenon bulb #,,,Im wondering if its feasible to upgrade the H7 hi beam to a xenon look bulb,,Ive done it with the fogs.
Also,is there an upgrade for the D2R which would raise the color temp? If so,can it be done w/o modification.(Btw,what is the color temp of the stock D2R bulb)

Standard Xenon D2R bulbs are 4000k. There are 6000k bulbs on the market, call 'Ultinons', but not DOT approved:

You can upgrade the high beam to any H7 type bulb you want. I would stay away from overwattage bulbs.

Is it me, or are the headlights on the newer W210's (i.e., my mom's 2001) held in by Torx screws? That's the only thing I could see that's holding the bulb holder in...

I had my air box off on my '99. I saw the small grill in the intake. How do you take it off? On my ol' bimmer, it had a snap ring, but the MBZ looks different. Any suggestions?
The grill can be removed from the ring by breaking apart piece by piece with a needlenose pliers. You can then smooth the remaining edges with a file.

If so, then yes it has 3 torx screws that you losen and then you turn the yellow holder to remove the bulb. DO NOT REMOVE THE TORX SCREWS!
