Changing the rear speaker deck
I am not sure if its called the speaker deck but its the part that is between the rear window and the back seat. It houses the speaker grills and the 3rd light.
I am thinking about replacing mine with a newer one and wonder if its something that I can do myself or should I take it to the dealer.
Thanks in advance.
Changing Rear Speaker Deck Instructions
The new shelf is from a 2001 E-Class. It included the rear brake light that is built right in the the rear deck. The connector needed to be changed in order to plug in the the original rear light.
The rear seat has to come out and the headrests need to come off. There are only 2 screws that hold the rear deck in place. It just slides up and out.
Yes, I did find it on ebay. It was the same color are the headliner and seats in my car and included the rear brake light.
The new one is a perfect OEM fit. Mercedes part number A210 690 2949, Ash color.
The person I got the shelf from upgraded to the rear power shade and had to replace his shelf with a 2 piece one. His old one was very clean and the brake light works great. So it is possible to upgrade to a rear shade and a new style center brake light at the same time.
Once you have the back of the rear seat out, roll down the insolation and you will see 3 large oval shaped holes just below the headrests. Reach through the holes and find the release tabs on both side of the posts to the headrest. The posts to the headrests are held in by spring clips that need to be lifted up with the release lever so that the knotch in the post can slide past. Do one post at a time. Hold the release and push back on the headrest at the elbow of the post. When you do the other side, make sure the side you just did doesn't pop back in. Be carefull not to break off the release tabs either. They are just a small piece of plastic about an inch long.
