side notes , I did try the Philips BlueVision H6W
and the yellow compare to the stock xenon.

I checked out your car, I see that you got LED for the citylight, how did you do that, do you have picture of the citylight and low beam on only, do the LED look or match the xenon headlight?

If you have 6000k or higher color HID's or stock HID's in projector housings then the LED will match perfectly. If you have stock xenons not in a projector housing then the low beam will be a little yellower than the LED but not much. I bought the LED's from www.ddp-leds.com

Does anyone know how to get rid of the darn bulb out warning when using LED city lights?

Josh K has LED's in there. What he did if I remember, is that he kept the regular stock bulb in there, but hooked it up so that it's not in the headlight lense, and then put the LED in the headlight lense. So basically, the stock bulb is present, and the addition of the LED to the wiring doesn't trigger any warning or something.

I'll ask Josh for more details.

But yea, I still want the LED's

Interesting idea - using the halo as a resistor......must give it a try but where do you get the extra bulb sockets/holders from?

My headlight went out last weekend so I decided to try the Sylvania CoolBlue headlights on my E420. While they look great, and are much brighter than regular halogens, it makes the two lights in the center next to the grill seem very yellow. Does anyone know of a replacement bulb for the center lights that would be whiter or "blue"?

Yugger, that's what we're talking about here. H6W is the bulb. I've tried LED's (blue or purple) and they seem to have the best effect but we're all trying to find a solution to stop the light out warning when we use the LEDs cuz they use less power and somehow tricks the on-board computer into thinking the bulb is out.......I use a Jap bulb that's slightly whiter/bluer and more acceptable than the usual Halo yellow but still not satisfied. On the link at the front of this thread, a Philips one is mentioned and I seem to remember someone saying that's pretty white too but darn expensive..........

I tried the Phillips BlueVision bulbs. The H6W's are an improvement over the stock bulbs, but still look yellow as compared to my HID's.

The BlueVision 55w fog lamps, though, look pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback Kev - been waiting for some honest opinion on the Blue Vision. I'm guessing the city lights could never be "pure white" given the small amount of power going thru them. That's why I'd rather explore colored LEDs so that it is in another color that would match the HIDs (blue or purple), rather than replicate it.

I would be afraid to use a higher wattage bulb in that socket, because that light is on all the time, and I don't want to melt the enclosure.

I read this thread about using LEDs, and I have some questions:

- how are the LEDs mounted? Did someone get a H6W receptacle from a junkyard and splice them in parallel with the existing H6W receptacle?

- If you leave the existing H6W receptacle in place, but not plugged into the light fixture, how do you prevent this bulb from burning other plastic parts under the hood, or from getting blown out if it gets wet?

I don't know what the other guys did but I actually found some LEDs with the same attachment as the H6W's so its just plug and play, except the power usage on the LEDs is so small that the computer thinks the bulbs are out.....that's what I've been trying to find a solution for - yes, a very good question about the recepticle from melting the other parts.

Desirably though, any electronic whizzes out there who may know if there is some kind of "resistor" that I can just implant in the wiring? This would be the neatest solution.

What vendor did you find you find that LED solution from? Was it posted already in this thread?

Well, if the bulb consumes 6Watts:

P = I * V

6W = I * 12V

0.5A = I

And if 0.5A is going throuh the bulb:

V = I * R

12V = 0.5A * R

R = 24 ohms

You also have to see what the voltage drop is through the LED assembly, and add series resistance to make this equivalent of 24ohms seen through the original H6W bulb.

But you have to use a resistor capable of dissapating the power you are going to put through it. You can't use the tiny ones sold at Radio Shack.

Once I've figured out this resistor thing, I'll let everyone know the details (possibly with pics) and hopefully you guys may be able to get it in the US or whereever else you're at.


Kev, I'm really stupid when it comes to this kind of thing - would it be possible to post some pics of what a resistor looks like and at what sorts of places I could find one that can do the job etc.?

24 ohms is Red Yellow Black and Gold on the resistor.

My calculation does not include the voltage drop across the led assembly, which would also have to be considered.
