Engine compartment light socket?

Engine compartment light socket?
A small intro ... Bought this '96 E320 two weeks ago. My first Benz, but I am a long time gear head (owned several domestic muscle cars, etc. over the decades) and I always service my own cars. I have fixed a couple small nuances on this car already. But I must say, this is a well built machine, and we just love the ride! Anyway, moving on....
Inspecting the engine bay, I came across what appears to be a light bulb socket on a bracket. It's between the washer fluid reservoir and the shock tower bay. I have attached a PDf with a few photos.
I have searched my owner's manual (came with car) and the 'net (including this forum) trying to determine if 1) is a light bulb socket, and 2) if so, what type/size bulb fits? So far, I have struck out on all fronts.
Looking at the last photo, one can see that the socket has been empty for ages (dirt, oxidation in copious amounts).
I'd appreciate anyone pointing this "old guy" in the right direction!

MBWorld Fanatic!
am pretty sure that 210s in the US didn't come with engine compartment
light. the wiring makes me think a mod was performed. i see a hole but
from your photo, not convinced it's a light bulb socket (yet)

Out Of Control!!
Very interesting-----found nothing without spending loads of time, however if I am reading the data correctly the car has an interesting past which may help in your quest.
The car started out as a SKD vehicle(knocked down) with USA specs for Vietnam!!
