Trunk Lock

Hi,

I originally submitted a post on this topic when I first bought my car, but now that more than a year passed perhaps some of you might have some additional comments.

I believe it started with late production 2002 models, but the trunk cannot be locked with the mechanical key. This means the only area not accessible to valet parking attendants is the glove box. Someone replied to my original post and stated it was because of the government regulation to provide a method of exiting the trunk in case you were inadvertently locked in (hence the green open button). MB corporate wasn't that descriptive, but they did confirm they did remove the locking feature.

Has anybody tried to change the lock or mechanism to a truly locking one? I believe changing it might eliminate the tele-aid auto door unlock feature (the one where you push in the trunk button), but I think I'd rather have the added security of being able to keep things in the trunk inaccessible to parking attendants.

Thanks!

How can I check it? I believe starting from W211 there is no locking mechanism in trunk. However W210 has it and you can lock anyway. From other point, the green button can bypass locking mechanism and open trunk, so I do not see an issue here.

Hi Dema,

The manual briefly addresses the issue, but states "2: Separate locking of trunk - remove mechanical key in this position (only vehicles built prior 09/01)..." My production date was after 9/01, and what happens is I can't turn the key to position 2 (which is to the right). So as long as someone has access to the inside of the car they can use the trunk release button in the center console. I just thought it was kind of interesting that if the inability to completely lock the trunk is related to a federal mandate, that it wouldn't apply to a 2002 BMW that I know you can still lock the trunk. I just thought I'd take one more stab that someone might have discovered a remedy...

Thanks!
