Outside temp keeps going up... in the dash that is

Hello All,

On my 2000 E 320 the outside temp starts to give a false and too warm reading after a cold start. It is about 5 celcius outside and at the first traffic light the temp just reads up and up.... once I can move on the freeway the temp will drop to a believable level and stay pretty ok for the rest of the ride. Is this a first sign of the demise of my sensor?

Thanks,
Marc

The sensor sits tight and fixed in the front bumper. Since it is winter it might indeed be a bit dirty with roadsalt or such crap. Ill give it a clean and see if this changes anything. If not can I conclude that the sensor is on its way out?

Yeah, i think so,

but prefer if you can diagnose the car to make sure if there are any codes will show-up that related to the out-temp. sensor..!

Ok, put in a new sensor and same behaviour. Cold start, 32F... then while standing still it slowly runs up to 48F. Probably still higher if I keep standing and idling... strange. Once I get on the freeway the temps will drop to a more believable level but still a bit too high. Could it be another connector that is dirty? Or somehow reistance in the wiring? I'll do a code check with a generic code reader I have.
Thanks,
Marc

Unless I am missing something I think the behavior is normal. While sitting and idling hot air can radiate from the engine to the sensor. Once moving air flow prevents that.
