Running light bulb replacement

Here is a mundane question for all of you...

I can't locate my manual at the moment and I've suffered a burned-out bulb in one of the smaller oval lights next to the larger main headlight. I'm not sure what MB calls this light...parking light, running light, etc.

My local parts store, which has everything, does not have a replacement for this. Their computer dictates a much larger bulb.

Does anyone have a manual listing the part number handy? I'm trying to advoid going all the way to my dealer for a $3 part.

Thanks!

-RB

p.s. it's a '98 430, but I'd imagine the part is the same through '02

The manual lists it as a "parking and standing lamp" bulb and calls it a "H 6W." 6W = 6 watt bulb. The "H 6W" probably isn't going to be of any help. What I'd do is take the burnt out bulb, walk into the store, and find the same bulb in the store OR you could also hand the burnt out bulb to the guy working there and make him find what you need. Just make sure the corresponding bulb is 6 watts as well.

Thanks for the info!

I'll assume that the H means halogen 6 watt.

Interestingly, the little oval light acts as the running lamp normally, but becomes the high beam when that is called for. I didn't know this until I was playing around in front of a glass window, but the Xenons do not change when the high beams are switched on.

I don't know if this is a product of HID lights, but I've never seen a combo running light/high beam before.

live and learn, eh?

Exclamation two light bulbs in lens

actually the center lens has two light bulbs. the h6 is the city light and the h7 is the high beam. the main light uses the h7 too. if you put your hand back there, the h6 sits below the h7.

Good Luck finding that bulb anywhere except the dealer.

I think H6 refers to the type of socket that the 6 watt bulb is plugged into. That bulb may be very difficult to find other than at the dealer.

Good Luck!

Well, thanks for everybody's info. You were right that the dealer was the only source I could find.
$9 for one tiny bulb. Such a deal!

I had to explain to the parts guy which one it was. Even he didn't know.

what year is your E-Class? The 1996 - 1999 has 1 single cover on the rear and the 2000-2002 has 2 twist off covers like this:

The H6W bulb is inside the smaller round opening pictured here on the left and below the H7 high beam bulb.

1997 E420. I've got the single cover off and can get the upper bulb out by removing retaining clips. The lower bulb is the bad one, and I can't see how it is supposed to come out. Does it snap out or unscrew? Access to area is tight.

This is because HID bulbs don't light up fast enough to serve as flashers.

W211 Mercedes have "bizenons" wherein a mechanical shield around the HID bulb in the outer unit moves when the the lights are switched to high. They still have normal halogen bulbs in the inner lights to serve as flashers and also as additional high beams. The W210 zenons are "first generation" for Mercedes and indeed serve only as low beams.

W211 inner lights have the same two bulbs as W210 inner lights, i.e. H6W for park and H7 for high beam/flasher.

Have you checked ? I buy them, alot, from either PepBoys or Kragen, they're everywhere. I use at least 2 pair/month (everytime work in light set). I think I pay around $1.99 for a pair.

It just came in different part number. If you can't locate, I can post picture of how the part suppose to look like.

lkchris,

Actually, the W211 uses a W5W wedge bulb instead of the H6W in the inner lights. They do use an H7 for the high beam.

I put some polarg m-17's in my city lights to match my 8k headlights. They run at 8w and look much brighter than the oem. They also have a slight hint of blue to match my headlights. Had them in for 5 months with no problems.
