To Keep or Not To Keep....

Well, I have the new car itch, and by "new car" I mean another used car. My 01 E430 4Matic is awesome. and only 78k miles! I'm starting to see some rust under the fenders forming now and my head already hurts from thinking about eh coming year of chasing rust issues and whatever mechanical issues I might run into in the future.

The big dilema: Sell it while I can still get something for it and finance another used, but newer car, or keep it and live with potential problems in the future but not have a car payment... I have to say, the car is perfect mechanically right now and I've done a LOT of preventative work to it.

So, anoyone else been in this boat before? Any words of advice from the MB wise? Thanks!

I just "re-homed" a 137K mile 2001 Lexus LS430 to get the new E400. I had the Lex since new, but when the repair bills for the first half of 2015 were equal to half the actual cash value of the car, it was time to move on. Also, I was seeing the first signs of rust on one door of the car, so there would be more to come, and I didn't want to be the one to deal with it. My Lexus, like your E430, was mechanically perfect when I sold it, but I had already has a few costly repairs come up and didn't want to be holding the keys when the really big one hit. After all, the 2001's are nearing 15 years old, and mine "lived" in Chicago.

That's just me, and I was in a position to go out and buy a new car to replace the old one. I'd say if you're going to replace it with another used one, unless you are getting CPO, I'd keep the 430. Better the car you know mechanically than somebody else's. You know how your car has been serviced and maintained. You don't know the other one.

That's what I'm thinking too. With KBB only being about 6k, there isn't TOO much depreciation left in it anyway. Even if I keep it for 2 more years then sell it for next to nothing I'll still have gotten my money's worth out of it. Thanks.
