If the smart knob require synchronization - inserting it in ignition and waiting few minutes should do the job, or you need new key.
But you might have switch-blade key with chip, that require actual synchronization.
I believe the procedure is in the manual as I did it years ago and no longer remember.

Assuming you have a key fob------
Post 2 is very misleading as you do not have to put key in ignition module to do any thing except start the car---all you have to do to lock and unlock the doors is make sure your key batteries are good and then push the lock or unlock button on your key fob---very simple!!

Beware about trolls, that pose as having knowledge about cars.
Here is how they do it on ML and likely it will be the same procedure.
If you have the system with red/green lights on the mirror, the sequence will confirm synchronization.

Troll is always a troll.
W210 and W163 are siblings, using the same technology and lot of the same parts.

Per page 116 of a 1996 E320 owners manual. "aim transmitter eye at inside rear view mirror receiver and briefly press transmit button twice. Within approx. 30 seconds, insert key in steering lock and turn it to position 2."
