If the smart knob require synchronization - inserting it in ignition and waiting few minutes should do the job, or you need new key.
But you might have switch-blade key with chip, that require actual synchronization.
I believe the procedure is in the manual as I did it years ago and no longer remember.

Beware about trolls, that pose as having knowledge about cars.
Here is how they do it on ML and likely it will be the same procedure.
If you have the system with red/green lights on the mirror, the sequence will confirm synchronization.

Per page 116 of a 1996 E320 owners manual. "aim transmitter eye at inside rear view mirror receiver and briefly press transmit button twice. Within approx. 30 seconds, insert key in steering lock and turn it to position 2."
