Weird taillight issue

Hello folks,

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed before someway- I have searched the forums and I cannot find anything specific to my own issue. The Mercedes dealer parts manager is clueless and the MB forum I am apart of on Facebook is not helping either.

Since I bought the car in July (had a 99- got in an accident and bought my 01 with the insurance check) the rear brake light has been defective. I tried replacing it with a bulb in my garage but that just fired a bunch of codes on the dash and it stopped the cruise control to work, so I had to throw it out. I went to the dealer to get the genuine lightbulb about a week ago and as soon as I did that it didn't work apparently. I tried to tighten it but sparks flew and the whole assembly didnt work- brake light and running on light. However, the turn signal and reverse light still work which I argue is the least important of the lights

The parts manager thinks its the circuit board. I am stuck as to what I should do. I am leaning towards purchasing an entire new assembly but I have no clue if that includes the bulbs, circuit board, etc. These little sockets are $17 a piece so I am gonna be a grumpy old man if I have to buy new ones... lol.

Sorry for the length of this, but I am trying to not give the local sheriff a reason to pull me over and to protect my vehicle from a collision. Any help would be appreciated, I am clueless. Thanks in advance!

m-benz body repairer
i think you're best bet would be to take it to the vehicle into m-benz approved shop and ask them to do a sort test/ diagnostic report on your vehicle to find out what causes the fault. but it sounds like there is a short on the light itself or some where the wire is touching.
