Spraying Gas!

Hi everyone! I registered a few days ago, and had planned on introducing myself before asking or replying to any questions, however that didn't happen! LOL!

I have a 2001 E320 with 150,000 miles.
When I take the gas cap off to fill up, gas and fumes spray all over the place! Its like its under too much pressure. Whats odd, is I keep getting a code saying that there is a leak, or it has a bad gas cap. Wouldn't that cause it to loose pressure? Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thank you so much in advance!

Welcome to the forum. The tank has pressurized system that in case of excessive pressure vents via charcoal canister and than in engine bay you have small plastic hose with small cone filter where the fumes go out.
Sounds like your system is clog. Check for replacing charcoal .

Thank you so much!!! But, it I have a leak in the system (which shows a code every now and then) wouldn't that depressurize the system? Or no?

My first guess would be that computer does not care if it is under-pressure, or over-pressure.
Any of those malfunctions triggers the code without giving specifics.
Chances are SD would give you more specific info, but will not clean evaporation system for you.
It is rare malfunction, but I hear that topping off at gas stations can clog charcoal filter.
