You say that you can move the shifter to the various positions, yet the transmission will not engage, however you can hear a grinding sound, but the car does not move----if that is correct----than A-- would be to make sure that you have fluid in the transmission and B---I have to assume that you have a CEL on the dash----if I am correct find someone who can read the transmission faults(an OBD reader will not work)---what are the faults??

Good idea would be checking CV joints and driveshafts.

This is more bozo benz make work post getting misinformation. The poster is not famuliar with automobile engins, transmissions and drive lines---if your foot is off the brake and the transmission does not engage to a selected gear---the drive shaft does not move and bad joints would not stop the rotation of the drive shaft!!
