Question E320 Vibrates in Reverse

Hello!

I am a new member of your site and can appreciate it already. I drive a 2002 E320. At almost 100,000 miles the car developed vibration in reverse. The vibration disappears when the car is warm or the weather is warm. Your database indicates that it might be the motor mounts. Do they become softer with heat or have some viscous fluid in them? What does it mean that motor mounts are "keyed" so I'll know what to ask the mechanic?

FYI: the trans mount was replaced because my inherited records said it needed to be replaced.

Looking forward to responses!
Victoria

Did the car vibrate in reverse before you replaced the trans mount. If it did not they may have broke the motor mounts when they lifted the trans up to replace them. I have had motor mounts become hard and break but I have never had a soft mount. I know some of them have fluid in them and as it gets older they leak and become hard

Yes the car did vibrate in reverse before the trans mount was replaced. The mechanic said the motor mounts did not need replacing, so I may need a second look/opinion. Thank you for replying. Cheers!

If I had a penny every time I was told that when even silly me has known there's a problem.

He may be the type of mechanic who waits for the part to break.

Or he may just be protective of his business. If it's not really clear that the part is bad and he charges you 500$ and your problem persists, you're going to give him 500$ worth of crap. So that's perfectly understandable.

Yes, do get a second opinion, but be thorough in your questions and ask how much life they think there is left in the mounts - not only whether they need replacement or not.

Edit: I won't be surprised at all if these are the original factory mounts. Just replace them anyways and enjoy a smooth ride

A gaggle of MB's
The symptoms of "failing"/"failed" motor mounts - yes, they are fluid filled and over time/age they "collapse".

1) At a braked-stop in Drive - if you move to Neutral - engine/car vibration goes away.

2) Starting the car - which starts in Neutral - as you move either to Drive or to Reverse - you feel start of engine/car vibration

----------------------------------

The maker of the original Mercedes part is Lemfoerder/Sach-Boges - and OE mounts are about $70-$80 each - and then there are China-made can be as low as $30 each.

So you know - China mounts often fail very quickly - in this case best to buy the "original" quality part.

On regular 2002 E320 - if I remember correctly - the left and right mount are the same/identical - however on E320W4 4matic - left and right mounts are different part #.

Again - that is from memory - keep the beat !

^+1^,

Also;-

"cracked flexible discs/bad driveshaft center bearing/loose U-joint", would cause Reverse vibration as well,,

have to check them carefully..
