E420 Alternator removal!!
Afternoon all,
I am at loose ends with this dam alternator, I disconnected the 2 rear electrical connectors I have undone the bottom bolt but the top bolt will not come out, it is way too long to take out as the fan clutch is in the way. Now I don't want to take the fan clutch out as I see that is another difficult job and you need a special tool to remove it. I have tried wiggling the alternator out but it is stuck in there I cannot see any other bolts either. All I need to do is change the alternator pulley as the previous owner had put on the V6 pulley instead and now it's miss aligned. Is there an easier way around this at all? Am I missing anything to remove it? There is no diy on this at all or any information.
Thanks

Try jacking up the engine slightly to see if the top alternator bolt will clear the fan clutch. There might be enough 'give' in the rubber motor mounts for this to happen. You may also have to loosen the mm retaining bolts. Use a 2X6 piece of lumber and a floor jack under the oil pan.

Any auto parts store will have a fan clutch removal tool just make sure there is a 36mm wrench in the kit.
Takes 2 minutes to take it out.
remeber the fan clutch is reverse threads.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to have another go at it tomorrow. I tried the hardware store and most of them want $60 for rental. I will jack up the engine and see if that clears it!!

Yer that's my dumbass it was a deposit, I ended up smacking the bolt to bend it and then I got it out. Switched the pulleys over and now it runs great!! Apart from another issue in another thread
