Why Can't I turn off ESP on E320?
I have a W210 E320 CDI. When I tramp it, the traction control kicks in to stop the rear wheels spinning, and a yellow triangle flashes on the dash.
Then I found a ESP button - when I activate it, the orange triangle appears on thedash permanently. Great, I thought, it's off.
But when I tramp it, the same thing happens - the triangle flashs on and off (but then stays on) and still won't let the rear wheels spin.
Also, how does this system work? Does it reduce engine power when the wheels start to spin, or does it apply the brakes

Out Of Control!!
Barry do yourself a huge favor and first read the owners manual.
All the engineering aspects of the ESP have been discussed at nausim on the internet---spend the day googling!!

This is what I hate about online forums. You ask a very specific question on a forum where you expect someone will know the answer, and then someone else goes to the trouble to log on, reply to your post, and then basically say nothing.
1. I don't have the manual.
2. I already Googled, and didn't find the answer
3. Unlike you (apparently) I have a job, and don't have "all day" to to try to find an answer to a question when I think that there will be someone that knows the answer off the top of their head

to fully disengage ESP you need to remove the ABS fuse, basically the ABS system wont work and jab at the rear brakes while you try to do a burnout (which is how the ESP system works).
Our cars dont have much power, so sometimes to do a burnout you may need a bit of help...little bit of gravel, or wet road will do the trick.
My E320 is a 96, so it doesnt have a ESP button but i was still able to do a pretty chunky peg-leg burnout on 19 inch wheels without disengaging traction control...but now that i have brabus rear brakes, no friggin way lol.
Edit: dont drive around without your ABS fuse, obviously, for safety reasons.

MB never made official note, but suppose pushing EPS will lower its functionality, but will not turn traction completely off.
Flatline is the first one I heard telling about pulling the fuse, but I don't think that is really advisable.
I was TRYING to play with ML on empty parking lot covered with snow.
After getting the car into drifting, I was pushing gas pedal to the floor, but within few seconds the computer would put the engine to the idle and I was sitting in the car that stop in the time, still holding gas pedal on the floor.
Hate when car is outsmarting me, but that is how technology goes.
On my new 440HP Ford Truck, the program limits the engine output on low gears for similar reasons.
