sliding roof problems

[posting for a friend, this is not my car]

The sliding roof will open about 2-3 inches until it makes some really bad crunching noises and then stop. If you hold the switch, the motor will run and there will be more bad noises. The roof does close ok, and the pop-up function works fine.

Is there anything that can be done about this? I cannot see or feel any thing in the path of the glass.

that doesn't sound good...

Is this a DIY thing or dealer? or maybe a body/glass/repair shop thing?

You may just have to replace the cable guides but you will have to get the rof panel all of the way open by hand. The guides are a $2 part on both sides that hold the cable on track. They are plastic and warp out causing what you described. The original ones are only held in by 1 screw each. They new ones have 2 screws that keep them from warping out. You have to drill a hole for the extra screw but it can be done yourself.

Thanks,

Is there anywhere I can see a pic or two of this procedure? A write-up would be great too, but I'll take whatever I can get.

I replied to your e mail sent.

E Klass, saw my car, and what I did. Like he said, it may cost you few dollors and 20 minutes of labor. You dont have to take anything off.

Check your e mail and reply, maybe your car has the same problem as mine.

I was able to get it open by hand and determine that it is the cable guides. I tightened them up but after about 10 test openings, the cable started to pop out again.

Are these parts available online anywhere? I've been searching but since I don't know the real part name or part number I haven't found anything yet.

You just have to go to the parts dept. at the dealership to get them. They are the lowest price part that you will get for your car from the dealership. Merc1 may still have the part number otherwise they are easy to describe to the parts guy. They are only $2 or $3 each so don't let them over charge you.

I picked up two 2-hole cable guides from the dealer today.

$3.40 each.
