cluster display

In this pic you can see two problems with the display. The left side is much dimmer, and one column of dots (pixels) is missing on the far right.

Are there bulbs that can be replaced? My guess is that one or more has gone out on the left.

The right side, I'm guessing, is a worse problem. If need be, can the module be replaced?

The dim part of the display is just a bad bulb from the back of the cluster. The missing dots are a major problem. You can get a whole cluster off of ebay and have the milage set to the same as what you have.

More info needed please. What do they look like, what's so cool about them? Are you sure the Mody Dick actually replaces the LED display as well or does it just replace the dails?

As E-Klass said you have a bulb out on the left. You can buy the bulb at the dealer, will cost about $2-3 and you can replace it yourself. Look at the old thread https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=54917

I don't know if I posted that right, but you can do a search for "replacing bulb behind clock"

The problem on the right, I have seen on my car once or twice but cleared up on it's own??? So don't have a solution for you there other than to hope for the same.

Oh, by the way, the procedure for pulling out the instrument cluster described in that thread is accurate...I did it myself was very simple. The cluster fits into the dash with friction...like a cork in a wine bottle.

I was told pulling out the cluster may stuff up the LEDs (weird)...is it really that delicate or is it pretty riskless pulling the cluster out?

Please give me strength bro's........I'm very keen to change the color of my back light......

CorpDL, you PM is full BTW.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll pick up some replacement bulbs and yank that thing out.

I'm not gonna worry about the right-side problem for now.

I've got a 2002 E and my display sometimes doesn't fully function with all the dots in place thus making the time and shift position look funky. Not sure either why this happens. It does, however, clean itself up after a bit....but sometimes it takes much longer. It's just annoying....

Just wondering, have you guys with problems ever pulled out your clusters? Could that be the reason....that's exactly what my mechanic said would happen if I pulled it out......

Dave,

moby dick is like a brand that sells whole clusters for all mercs. I was reading it in a jap magazine (ok, i was just staring at the pictures!) but it comes in all different colours and LED lights..it doesn't look like its just the dials, but the whole thing.

I was wanting to change my dials to whites but i was told if the workers don't pull out the pins properly while installing the faces, it'll always rattle when you maintain a current speed.

i'll scan the stuffs for you when i have time. :P

well it was a serious PITA to get the cluster out, I had to remove the under-dash panel and push it out from behind. But once it was out changing the bulb (or as the MB part # description calls it "rivet") was no problem. The cluster went back in nicely.

It's nice to have an evenly let display.

Dun worry Carlsson, the latest copy of Super Mercedes has a write up on the Mody Dick. I'm not sure if they make it for the pre-facelift 210. When I have the courage to take out the dash, I have an idea to create the same effect, more cheaply......thanks for looking out tho.

I have had my cluster in and out more than 10 times. I have had it apart to change faces and needles. So far, no problems.

no worries Dave..

you probably have the same issue of super mercedes as me. the write up shows a nerdy dude holding a cluster no?

They do sell the pre W210 cluster, saw it in the add, with blue dials..I'm just dying for blue bulbs on the clusters instead of the regular yellow bulbs. Anare there such bulbs?

Dim Display

I had the same problem right side got so dim I couldn't read it. Then one day it it was fine and has not happened again.

Along the same line can all the lights on this display be changed to blue lights? It's a theme I've been working on. If so where can I get blue bulbs?

Thanx

same thing here

Got the same problem last winter, temperature gage LED missing few dashes, good thing it was still under warranty. Dealer replaced a whole cluster. Who knows few years down the road, it might happen again. If it did, I probably won't replace with OEMs anymore.
