Mercedes has been very clear that my 2001 E320 comes with an 18-gallon fuel tank, meaning I can usually get about 17.5 gallons due to the displacement from the pump.
Alas, the fuel gauge reads 21.0 (rather than 18) gallons when full, and it runs out of gasoline when it reads anywhere from 0.2 to 0.8 gallons.
My mechanic cannot solve the problem. I do know the vehicle was rear-ended many years ago and repaired by a Mercedes dealer. Miscalibrated fuel sender? Wrong fuel sender?
Pretty irritating that I cannot solve this issue, which should be simple.

It could be that your cluster is coded incorrectly. The National Version in the cluster changes the fuel gauge behavior based on the home country.Originally Posted by Richard Latker
