can i swap 722.6 gearboxes

my Mercedes e230 (w210) 97model has a 722.600 gearbox and it blew up and the mechanic told me that it needs to be replaced. I have been shopping around and I got a 722.641 gearbox. so my question is can I swap them and if there is a need to make some alterations, what am I going to change to make them compatible. thanks in advance for those that are going to help

The 722.641 equates to a W5A580 Daimler-Chrysler that was used with 5.7 liter V8 and 3.7 liter V6 engines. These transmissions are considered "Large" NAG transmissions.

The 722.600 is used with the 111.xxx series engines and is considered a "Small" NAG transmission. The designation Large and Small refer to the different internal gear rations in gears 1, 2, and 3.
Large Small
1st 3.59 3.932
2nd 2.19 2.408
3rd 1.41 1.486

If you use the large NAG in lieu of the small NAG, the TCU's monitoring of the speed sensors will not match the data in memory and the TCU will decide the transmission is slipping and place the transmission into fail safe mode. There is no way to prevent this except by disassembling the transmission and replacing the planetary assemblies with the correct parts for your car. A caveat would be if you could hack into the TCU and modify the data.

A better bet (but I will not guarantee these will work) are the following transmissions that came with 111.xxx engines:
97-98 C230 722.600
99-00 C230 722.600/5
98-99 SLK230 722.605
00-01 SLK230 722.616

At this point it may be easier to just order new internal parts for your transmission and rebuild it. You will find the ATSG manual for the 722 transmissions to be of great assistance for this. Worth every penny.

That's all great advice, but if you don't swap the same for same I would ask your mechanic if he has the experience rebuilding the transmission and all the special tools that go with the job------find a 722.600 and live long and prosper-------even if you fall and hit your head and purchase the .641 you will need the ECU and TCU---then you have to find someone who can learn both modules to your VIN and of course you know thats omly a couple of hours on the front lawn.

thank you for a very informative reply. i had avoided looking for a 722.600 believing that it would give me similar problems and die down because it would have been of the same age.

edit: is there a way of checking for alternative gearboxes which are compatible online?

If you are sure of the part number, the only correct way will be to visit any dealer and do a where used search on EPC

1922 Ford Model T / no OBD
Go to benzworld and follow topics by MAVA. He rebuilds those transmissions and made several long pictorials how to do that.
They have been used in lot of models, so threads are spread between model sections.
Then I would estimate 99% mechanics misdiagnose or neglect diagnosis and want to replace the box, when all is needed is $10 pilot bushing and some cleaners.
Post what are the codes?
