1997 E420, 2000 durango
engine trouble
I have a E420 (1997) and it has 101k miles on it. Over the past week ive noticed that the engine is begining to get very hard to start. when its cold i have to let it crank for a few seconds and then stop, and then crank it once more and it starts right up (it also starts up right away when warm). But this morning when i started it, the engine was vibrating and shacking the car very rigorously. If anyone knows what might be causing this, and how to fix it then your info will be most appreciated!

MB (not dealer) claims you should be able to get over 200,000 miles on that engine, if it's been properly serviced through the years. Hopefully this is something pretty simple, or at least not expensive. Try emailing MBTECH, I know he hangs out on the R170 board, but maybe he can help you.

Most likely is NOT in need of an overhaul. Perhaps a good tune up, ie:plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc. You should also have the computer checed for any codes. Sounds like to me its in need of some routine maint. May have been neglected in the past

Well i definitly dont think it needs an over-haul. I bought the car from my step father about 5 months ago (3500 miles) and i asked him if he has ecperienced this before. He says that he has and that it could be something wrong with the fuel supply...possibly the pump or a blockage of some type. I also called the MB dealership and their tech told me that it could possibly be the battery or most likely the fuel. I guess i gotta take it in though to make sure the problem doesnt progress. and yes, the car has not been maintained properly. I only hope that i can get it back on its feet and working properly. thank you for the help. OH and on the MAF- he cant remember if it ever has been changed haha...i really really need to take it in and have it totaly checked thoroughly!
