Rough idle when hot, after long drive press clutch and motor shutdown
Hello,
I live in Europe, in Slovakia, a couple months ago I bought a 2000 E200 gas/lpg with manual six-speed transmission. The car has 456 000 kilometers and runs rather well. Glad about buying it for 600 euros! Got a bit more in the car now with needed repairs.
Here we have inspections evrey two years for mechanical and emisions.
I was just in for my emissions test and the car failed. A mechanic friend was talking about opening the motor putting new piston rings and so on. His toughts were that the emison fail was simply due to normal wear from the engine.
I am wondering about the cause of the emisions fail as the motor does not have any major issues. I do have minor issues with idle sometimes. It made me wonder if the emisions problems could be related to a sensor or something like it.
Starting: most of the time, the motor starts fine but sometimes I will need to hold it 5-10 second to start and when that happens it idles rough (maybe just normal that it idles rough after that).
Driving: After driving at the same speed for a while (on the highway for example), if I press the clutch and just let myself go, often the motor will almost always shutdown.
After a long drive, if I stop at a light the idle will most often be pretty rough
If I have to open the motor, I will, but if the cause could be simpler, of course I would be happy.
I have a very minor exhaust leak on the exhaust manifold on one cylinder.
I do not have any lights on.
Tell me your toughts
What do you think?

Hi Slovaskia, have you tried to replace the spark plugs and spark wires? Can you test the energy that the ignition coils use when the engine is working using a oscilloscope? This test can indicate if the coils are bad and also helps identifying a spark plug and spark wires.
My car had an issue like that and were the spark plugs and spark wires, after replacing then it worked fine.

It really does not feel to me like the engine is the problem. But I might be wrong, everyone says the norms are so strict for petrol engines here that simple wear could be the problem failing emmisions...

Hey,
in the end the problme was the fuel pressure regulator that went bad and a little hose that was unplugged. The hose out from the feul pressure regulator was broken open too.
All fixed
