SRS Light...
My 1989 E 320 SRS light came on last week for no apparent reason. Am I in danger of having the airbags deploy spontaneously or not at all? If I put my briefcase on the seat it goes off. The same thing happens when I have a passenger in the front seat. When there is nothing on the seat it comes on and stays on.

When the airbag warning light is on (SRS) the air bags are inoperative.
About the air bag going off when something or someone is in the passenger seat, the normal is to be on. Is the yellow led near the gearshift on? Is so, check the fuses on the fuse box at the engine bay.

Yes, the yellow light is on near the gear shift as well. I gave the contacts a good cleaning followed by a shot of WD40 (for the car) and replaced all the fuses, Is there a sensor in the seat cushion?

Yes, the sensor looks like a grid, ande when some part of it is broken this light comes on. You can replace it (this is expensive) or use a emulator that is for sell in aliexpress (this is cheap) in this case the airbags will be always ready as if someone were occupying the passenger seat.
