It might be, that the '87 model diesels were the last fully mechanical million mile low maintanence diesels ever to be produced by MB.
Although the engines for the '95 - '99 E300's are very robust and will go the long haul if you stay with them.
Can't speak for the new CDI's, but I've heard the E300's are a dream compared to the potentiality of problems that COULD go wrong with them as time wears on.
Despite that I think the '95 E300D is a very nice car. Very modern, solid, and quiet. Good fuel economy, and good power once you get up to speed. Nice sound to it too.
