E300TD bad gas mileage
I've been getting 22 to 24 mpg in my 98 E300TD. I took it to a local German stop to see if there's a fuel leak because I can smell a strong diesel smell from the car and when I start it up there's smoke out the back. I spend 55 dollars a week filling up my tank and it's killing me as a college student. The German shop said there's nothing substantially leaking, although there's a small drip from the fuel pump it would cost 1600 to replace with OEM (tf that's more than dieselmeken high performance pump). They said it might be age, but my car is mint condition only 144000 miles! I heard all about the great gas mileage other owners with more mileage get! Wtf
What do you guys think I should do? I asked if I can get a tune and they said don't mess with the car. I really want 30mpg!

Start with replacing all aged fuel tubings.
benzworld had good topic about it with parts number.
The total cost in the past was about $50, so "college student driving poor Mercedes" should afford it.
Than 22 mpg in city driving is not bad. You can expect 30+ on highway, but that isn't econobox.
it sure is quieter here with Plutoe on suspension

This vintage diesel gets 22 to 24 around town and in the low 30s on the highway, if you stay out of the turbo. Diesel fuel leaks are typically stopped by replacing orings or fuel lines. You don't replace a pump due to a leak! You may need a better mechanic.
