Telephone Tone at Startup
I have a 2000 E320 and upon startup, you hear a semi-long tone beep (not a dialtone) that I believe is connected to the phone feature (which I do not have). Is there a way to turn this tone off? I noticed the 2001 E models didn't make this noise upon startup.

Have an 01 E and do not have this tone (No Phone) but have a phone in my 02 ML500 and also do not have the tone. On a 98 ML I had it did have the tone when the phone was installed in the car but not when not installed

My dad owns a '00 E 320 and also has this tone on start up. He has no phone connected to the car's system. My '01 CLK 55 does not have this tone nor does a friend's E class of the same year. it seems that this is a feature in pre '01 autos that signifies the activation of the teleaid system. A test / confirmation tone of sorts.

You are not alone. I have the same tone on my 2000 E320 at start up. It does not do it if you start the car less than 15 minutes after you turned it off. I had it looked at and the service guy played around on the phone key pad and mentioned that it is coming from that. It did not help and Iam unwilling to spend more time on this minor nuisance, maybe at the next scheduled maintenance I will have them fix it or better though, I get the phone installed.
