I had the dealer install my H & R bars recently. The front bar tends to rub the catalytic converters, so take note there. You may have to bend the heat shields away from the bar. Take extra care in installation of new bushings. I recommend you replace the factory end bushings also.

I am having a noise problem with the front bar. Not sure what it is yet. I think it is the end bushings on one side that were not replaced.

Rear subframe has to be loosened and dropped a bit. GOOD LUCK!

Update on bar/bushing noise

Noise got worse and worse from front end. Put car on lift and found that both the H & R bushing were bad (after only 1000 miles!) Called H & R to find out what was going on. They couldn't really tell me. I requested a new set of bushings shipped next day (they made me pay for shipping!) because I was doing brake job and wanted to replace bushings at same time.

Took off the front bar and completely reinstalled with new bushings. Inspected both end links/bushings and they were fine. This time I installed with stiffest adjustment (highly recommended). Noise completely went away. However, after about 800 miles, I am started to hear it again in left front.

For some reason, the bushings distort and start allowing side-to-side motion. After a while it causes a popping/clunking sound. H & R is not much help. If anyone knows why this is happening, please enlighten me.

The H & R front bar has two positions in which you can install it: firm and more firm. I tried both and can not tell that much difference, so I advise you to install it on full firm.

However, am really having a problem with noise: squeaking, etc. Going to put it on the lift yet another time to see what is going on. Beginning to think I have a bad front bar or it is just a bad design. Still in warranty until April, so will see what H & R wants to do.

PLEASE let me know if you get this same noise. Always happens after about 800-1000 miles. Watch those bushings! Already on my 2nd set.

Good Luck!

Back to the "adjustable" front bar. Funny thing....I took the front sway bar completely off and drove it to be sure the noise wasn't coming from another area. It drove fairly normal, not like what I would expect. To me, these cars do not respond much from bigger bars. I have the larger H & R in the back also.

Does anyone out there have any inside connection to H & R customer service or engineering? I REALLY wanna know what is going on with these noises...a real pain in the ***!

Got mine from Luke @ tirerack.com.
Thank You guys.
As for the bushings i heard that you dont have to grease H&R bushings which is not true before you put them in you should put grease on them if that does not work than i realy dont know.

Squeaking bushings

I am bringing this thread back to the top to see if anyone knows what is going on. You can read the earlier thread about my squeaky bushing problems. It is still happening even after replacing the bushings.

Does ANYONE out there have any customer service or engineering contacts at H & R. So far, they have not been any help. The bushings collapse and start a side to side movement after about 1000 miles. This should NOT be happening.

Can anyone think of anything that I can do? What is causing this? THANKS!

Front Bar Problem

Well, after almost 2 years of dealing with it, I finally removed the front H & R anti-sway bar. After all the bushing replacements, noise, and lack of support from H & R, I am back to the stock front bar. Leaving the rear bar on to see how it handles.

Truthfully, I can tell absolutely no difference in handling between the stock and H & R bars. I really believe it was a bad design and no one is stepping up to fix it. With the stock bar and bushings, ALL the noise is gone. No more squeaking, clunking, slapping, etc.

Will sell the front bar cheap if anyone wants it. You will need your stock end links and purchase new bushings from H & R.

Mark Cummings did you install the rear sway bar yourself? If so how hard was it to lower the rear subframe?

if you do not properly grease the bushings it will cause a ton of problems. but if you lube everything properly it should run perfect, had H&R sways on the M3 for years not a single squeek and i lubed the hell out of them.

Ok, I couldn't wait for warm weather to install the rear sway bar. I found a shop in Massachusetts that installed the rear sway bar for $80.00. Which is pretty good because some of the posts I read were talking about $800.00 in labor. Anyway the car is real tight handling now that the Eibach sway bars and Bilstien Heavy duty shocks have been installed.

From what I have been reading the E55 sway bars are the reason why us E320 have to go with the Eibach or H&R sway bars. After installing my bars the car handles real tight. Too bad I have to put the car away for the winter. But I will drive it until the snow falls.........
