Engine temp. sensor

Does the engine temperature sensor control the cold start fast idle. On a cold morning my car starts right up to about 1200 rpm but within 30 seconds drops to 800 rpm. Is this normal?

Same cold idle on both of my E55's. Both idle at 1200 rpm for 30 seconds and then drop to low idle.

Thanks bbirdwell, mine runs perfect except on first start in the cold morning. Have to let it warm up for a few minutes before I put it in gear or it will stall. Just once a day. Trying to figure it out. No codes I lived in SC so it was always fairly warm. Moved to NJ and it doesn't like the cold mornings

What tune up would that be. Did the 100,000 service about 6000 miles ago. Change filters every year regardless of miles

You just reported that your engine dies under the load and that's why I advised to start with tune up. Just becouse you did it 6000 miles ago is not making the engine performing, does it?
Obviously you can start with replacing piston rings. Your car, your choice.
