W210 Cubby - Compartment

Hi. I have an analog phone on my 97 E420. I want to remove it, but I would have a empty slot on the console. I asked some people on the forums and they said that I could go to the dealer and put a "cubby". Went there this morning and they quote me part # 210-689-03-31 for $6.60 (I was surprised it is so cheap). Is this the right part? Is it plug and play. Just slid it in?

The storage compartment that I am looking for is the one between the radio and ashtray. Thanks.

I changed my analog phone unit out for a 'cubby' unit I bought off ebay for about $30. It was all inclusive plastic cubby, burlwood cover and sleeve, etc. The analog phone control unit will slip out of your burlwood sleeve piece. There is a clip on the back side of the unit that releases the phone caller id/button piece out as well as the small 2x2 cubby beside it. I pulled my stereo unit (you'll need a stereo removal tool or remove the ash tray piece, check other threads on this) out far enough for me to reach behind the analog unit and push on the tab or clip to release both the caller id/buttons and the small cubby.
The cubby piece you are looking for is just a piece of plastic, so I could see that piece being cheap. I replaced my unit before I realized that I probably could of replaced just the plastic cubby portion. So after all this long reply, the answer is 'Yes', that sounds about right for that piece. And it is easy to plug and play it.

mbmiller, thanks for the reply. I purchased the removal tool from eBay and it was quite easy to remove the radio and pop out the telephone module.

Can't find anybody to buy the cubby from? I thought the dealer would sell it too. I guess I can live with the plastic cover for now. I just need the storage space.

Cubby install

I also have a '97 E420. I had mine taken out by the dealer at no charge and they then installed the cubby as they "Had a stack of them in the back". The dealer I use is an MB authorized service shop but not for new MB sales. I stood there and watched the guy de-install the phone stuff and install the cubby...it took him about 3 minutes.

You might want to call around to some MB shops in your area and see if they have a used one.

Good Luck!

Which gets me to thinking....wonder if there would be such a stack at a sound system installer which the local Benz dealer refers people to? Worth a try.
