I thought I spent an exorbitant amount of time researching how to change my 4matic's transmission fluid and filter, and also the 4matic TC. I bought the pan gasket and filter and was ready to buy the fluids but decided (wisely as it turned out) to have my trusted mechanic do it since I don't have any way to safely raise and support the vehicle while I'm underneath working.
"It's easy," I told him. "I read all the tips and instructions online from my favorite MB forums." Not.

"The Transfer Case Fill/Drain Plugs are completely hidden/inaccessible quickly. I am not sure what information you had found based on our previous conversation, but the fill plug is up above the driveshaft, which based on the information we have found, would require us to remove the exhaust and driveshaft to gain access to it. Also, one of the bolts broke while trying to remove the Transmission pan from the vehicle. Not only did the bolt break, but the hook piece that the bolt goes through to secure the pan to the case is broken as well."
My vehicle is a 2000 e320 4Matic. Was I totally mistaken in what I read online about the drain/fill plugs on the TC?? Must they remove the exhaust and driveshaft to access them??
