As luck would have it... apparently the former owner of my 2000 E320 must have banged into something with the front headlight. The "grey" plastic case that holds the lamps to the bumper/radiator support is cracked in one spot. The light stays in the car, but it's fairly loose and inset a bit. I never noticed it until the other day when i was cleaning the bumper area...

There is nothing at all wrong with the light other than the grey plastic housing being cracked, unfortunately. I doubt MB sells this part individually and I don't want to spend $800 on a new unit when the Xeons are fine. Do you think I could get a used "non Xeon" light off ebay and use the same case over, just putting the Xeon parts into it?? Any ideas, suggestions??

Yes You Can Get another Headlight HOUSING and change over the parts
You WILL Need a Heat gun to help remove the lens..If You Get a NON Xeon Housing you WILL have to drill some holes for the Ignitor/Wires
Use LOTS of sealer to reinstall the lens to avoid any leaks

Is it also possible to gut the reflector and lense from a MY00+ and install them into a MY96-99?

No. I think they're shape differently, a bit.

Think I might have a look at some of the junk yards for a replacement (perhaps without the other bits in the back) to see if I can just replace the thing without having to glue the lenses in (sounds like a PITA)...

...nope he cannot...the housings were only available separately for the 95-99 models and no longer for the 00 and up 210s...
