Unhappy Car Vibration

A few days ago after getting off of the highway, on the offramp when I was slowing down I can feel a distinct vibration in the car that seems to be from the engine.

There are no noises at all out of the ordinary, the idle seems rough, and then after a few minutes the engine light /electronics message came on.

I limped home and await my mechanics schedule to open up on Tuesday to t
take her in.

I have a '97 E420, anyone else ever get this symptom?

Luckily I have a motorcycle for the meantime.

You'd be best served to stay as for away from the dealership as possible. Take the car to an Autozone, or a reputable local mechanic who can hook up your car to their diagnostic computer to read the error code. Ususally autozone will do it for free, a mechanic may charge you 1/2 hour labor. Then get back on this forum and search on the error code that the computer gives you. In the search results, you'll also get some ideas of what the fix will be, whether or not you can do it yourself, and the approximate cost. Only then, if absolutely necessary, take it into the dealer (better yet to your reputable local mechanic). You'll be saving yourself hundreds to follow this method first. You didn't give too much information about your car and problem but it sounds like a faulty MAF Sensor. Your dealer will quote you around $700 to fix it. You can do it yourself in about 15 minutes for $280.

How did you determine which coil went out? Did you take it to the Autozone for the free error code reading? Or was it through a visual inspection?

my mechanic

My mechanic pulled up the error code, and determined the coil. I had a oil return hose which was also completely mush. Looks like it deteriorated from heat and vibration over time. While everything was apart I had him check and replace plugs and wires, and a fresh oil change.

I have a great Benz only mechanic here in seattle that fixed everything and only charged me under 500.00 for parts and labor.
