Thumbs up Tire Test

Don't know how many E55's came with the Michelin Pilot Sports or the Dunlop SP-9000's but I'm glad mine came with the Dunlops! I found this tire test online! They (Automoble Magazine) used a Mustang Cobra, but the results are probably usefull for my E55 anyways.

Otto deserves a reply even if this was posted Feb 2002!

My 2002 E55 came with the Dunlop SP Sport 9000's.

Doesn't the E55 have a sticker on the drivers side B pillar saying only use the Dunlops or Michelins?

Dunlops vs Michelins

I have run 18" 40-series Dunlop SP9000, Bridgestone S03, and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires on my E430. The Michelins (this is the second generation Pilot Sport) and Bridgestones run circles around the Dunlops. The Dunlops were noisy and the wear was not desirable. The Bridgestones were great tires, but had very stiff sidewalls which made mounting/dismounting difficult. However, they were very quiet, wore evenly, and gripped great, especially in rain. The Michelin PS2 are so far fabulous tires. Very quiet, super grip, a bit more flexible sidewall than Bridgestone for better ride. Wear: we'll see.

Had the ContiSports on the 430, pure junk. Changed to Eagle F1-GSD3's and the difference was night and day. Better than the Pilot Sports as far as wear, nearly equal grip, less noise. Bought my 55 w/brand new Pilot Sport AS??? (don't know why these were fitted in So. Cal.) Not impressed so far, but better than the Continentals on the 430 for sure.

How old are the Eagles? I had a set of the previous GSD2 series and they were the worst tires I ever had. Sticky like glue, but after wearing down just a hair, they howled unbelievably. I thought my wheel bearings were shot.

That's what happened to the Continentals! 60-70% tread left and I swore I had a bad wheel bearing. Dealer charged me $90.00 to tell me I needed tires by swapping with another car. I buy the Goodyears, and find out the car needed an alignment pretty bad even though it didn't pull. I was pi$$ed. DS3's are supposed to be far better than the earlier version, but only have 4K on them and now the car is getting sold. Great so far though. Don't care for the tread wear on the Pilot Sports and the AS's on the 55 are NEW and make quite a bit of noise. Hope they at least wear better than the regular Pilots.

I thought the Goodyear GSD3's were pretty bad too. At lower speeds, my car sounded like the tires were flat. They just made the worst noise. I wasn't very impressed with wet or dry grip of the Goodyear GSD3's. I will say they were marginally better than the Continental Conti sports. However, under no conditions would I buy them again.

I replaced the Goodyears with Sumitomo HTR+. After about 20k miles, they are starting to get a bit noisy, but at $110 per tire, they've been great up to this point.
