Question '97 E420 Transmission Question

I own a beautiful 1997 Mercedes E420 which I acquired a few years ago. The local MB dealer refuses to give me any maintenance records for my car, which I bought 3rd party. The transmission on my car recently has gone into electrical limphome-mode and needs servicing. Probably the first servicing this trans has ever had...I want to DIY this instead of spending large sums of money at a 3rd party mechanic, let alone going to the dealer. I have done a lot of homework on parts and the actual work that needs to be done. I am in need for parts and found a used '02 E320 with a 722.664 trans in a bone yard and I want to know if any internal parts are cross compatible with my 722.664 trans.

Can anyone explain the differences with internal parts between a 1997 Merc E420 722.6 trans and a 2002 Merc E320 722.6 trans? Are any parts cross compatible with each other or do I have to go hyper-specific with exact model and year? Solenoids, Circuit board, 13 PIN Connector + O-ring etc.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

While doing your research did you read anything about symptoms of a failed or flakey transmission conductor plate? That may be all you need to replace instead of an entire tranny replacement. I'll let others speak to the compatibility with an 2002.

i respect your fortitude however you are in way over your head with diagnosing your transmissions issues. first you have a 500 usd car that will start to become very expensive to repair if you dont have the factory diagnostics which will quickly let you know what's the problem . then access to mb epc for correct part purchase and mb wis to teach you how to repair you will be at the hands of forum members and untold hundreds of auto repair shops that operate on oh i guess it this. mb epc will also guide you on what parts are interchangeable between systems and model years.
go back and do your homework then you will be able to correctly diagnose and repair your issue as all else is FUYAA

hello ! the sun gears are different they are 3 for V6 and 4 for the V8 you can fit practically all V8 trans for your E420 you will just have the lever lock which will not work on certain model and if your gearbox remains in 2nd c is that the computer has a problem passes the xentry the 722.6 are indestructible since I have a CLK 430 with a 722.632 I put 70mkg in it and it does not move

I did find out about the conductor plate and the connector plug which I am replacing. This from what I have been reading are the most common issues with this trans. I also found out this transmission has not ever had a service job done to it in its lifetime. I currently have 220K on the clock and am currently doing a service job. I'm not going to try and figure out bone yard parts from another different Mercedes. Plus I was abler to find the proper number 722.625 and conduct all of the rest of my research and new parts, plus tools. Thank you for your response. Aaron

Thank you all for your responses. I really appreciate it. I was able to get the info off of the transmission, a 722.625 and conduct better, more concise research into the particular problems. I found oil in the connector plug, so there probably would be the problem. I am currently doing a service of the transmission with replacing the conductor plate, connector plug, filter and oil. This transmission was never serviced in its lifetime, now with 220K on the clock. Thank you Plutoe, especially for your reply. I was a bit new into my research in which why this question came up. I love this car and I want to keep driving it. It's the sentimental value that holds my heart.

Not sure if your year still had a drain plug in the torque converter, if your still working on this project may be a good idea to drain that too.
