Understanding Three Categories of CAN Faults

1--A CAN time out fault code is set due to the absence of a CAN input signal------an example: no CAN message was received from control unit. Although the control unit and sensors may be at fault the fault could also be in the CAN network.

2--A CAN Bus Off fault code. An example: A Bus Off fault is set when the control unit can not send the amount of messages or the messages are incomplete and then the control unit switches off for a short period of time. In this case the primary reason is a faulty control unit.

3--A Functional CAN fault code. An example: A functional CAN fault is set because of an implausible CAN input signal. In this case the CAN network is not at fault, but the transmitting control unit or its sensors are faulty.

Hopefully this will help with your diagnosis when you see these types of CAN faults in your short test list.
