Is the E series for me?
Hello all,
I just sold my wifes 92 LS400 and looking for another car. The LS400 served us very well for 7 years and about 80k miles. (She has 101k when we got her). The only major repair/service was changing the timing belt. Other than that all repairs were brakes, belts, etc.
Can I expect as good service from the E series?? I'm looking a 96-97 models.
Any thoughts appreciated

I have had good service from my 96. I have 111K on it now. Were you looking for a 6 cyl or an 8 cyl? The 96 and 97 E320 and E420 have different motors than the 98+ E320 and E430. The 8 cyl E420 became the E430 when the new engines were rolled out. The E320 name stayed the same but the engine changed from the inline 6 to the V6.
There are a few faults with the E-Series:
Rear window regulators break
Door check straps creak
Lower control arm bushings creak and pop
Mas Air Flow sensors seam to fail often
Nice car inspite of that.

Tough one....
The model year you mention is a W210 body.."round eyes"! I have owned several MB products over the years, back to 1980, and among them are 4 W124 E series (1986 - 1995). Purchased them with 100+- K and when I sold them they had 300+ K and were GREAT cars. I was never afraid to buy a used Benz with high mileage (over 60K miles) I actually looked for them. My current car is a 1997 W210 E320 and it is a terrible car. If I had been following this forum I would have been better informed...I had no idea the quality had dropped so much. Among the major issues that worry me the most is the rust....these cars have a very real problem with rust and as a result will not hold their value. If I was you I'd look for a good 94/95 E320 or get another Lexus.....it'll be my next car...within the next month!
