Cracked !
This happened to co-worker of mine, he owns 2002 Taurus, he stated he started his car and started the heater to defrost the windshield, 1/2 hr later he wiped the melted ice/snow with his hand "Did not use scraper" and he discoved the windshield had CRACKED 
Anyone have an explanation why this happened? Did it ever happen to your MB before !!! Any thought !! other than :

i work with glass so ill give my take on it. glass is very susceptible to quick changes in temperature and a rapid expansion or contraction will cause it to crack. this can happen in the winter when your defroster is heating a frozen windshield, or in summer when a hot windshield comes in contact with the cold water of a car wash. it may have also just started from a small hairline crack or chip and with the cold it cause the crack to expand.

what happened to one of my coworkers was that a little stone hit his winshield. The initial crack from the stone was just like a hair line, bearly noticable. As soon as winter came and did the same thing, hot air on cold glass, the whole windshield cracked.

The rear window of my 01 VW Jetta spider-webbed for no apparent reason once. It was early morning & the window was wet from the night before. The sun apparently heated the interior of the car enough to cause the problem because there was no chip, crack etc prior to the incident & the exterior of the glass was perfectly smooth.
When I opened & closed the car door, it collapsed into the rear deck.
$400 and a shop vac full of glass later, it was almost "not quite like new".

I'm not surprise, it happened to my 01' Maxima. I was driving up in Rio Rancho, NM and it was colder than what it is in Albuquerque. Then coming back, i noticed the a small line, as it turned out that my windsheild cracked. It started from a speck of a chipped glass when I inspected how it cracked in the first place. So probably your friend had a chip or some existing crack thta wasn't noticable that probably caused the crack.
