A whirling thud sound at 40 to 60 mph??

At around 40 MPH I hear a deep rhythmic whirling thud sound. It's not my radio.
It's been that way for 2 yrs. I thought it was a bad alignment or bend rims. I had the car aligned & rims changed many months ago.
Could it be in the transmission?
The car handles fine & always checks out ok when in the shop for usual maintenance. I play music a lot so a usually don't hear it & I forget about it. How can I eliminate this sound?

If you can isolate the noise on one side of the car other the other, front or back, it may help to identify where the noise is coming from.

Going to pick up my E from the shop today after a R&R of a rear wheel bearing. I had a seized bearing and made a sort of clack clack sound.

Heard other cars with a bad bearing and made a different type noise, more like what you described.

good luck,

thanks for the info

I'm taking it to the shop on Thursday. Usually I don't hear the sound since I'm jamming in the car. Even with the radio off it's just sublte in the background, kind of hypnotic if you don't realize the sound is there.
Maybe I'm being picky?
Do you have a pic of your car. I'm thinking of getting the Eibach spings & shocks w/dampeners.

I've noticed the same subtle wobbling/whirling sound, especially at about 50 MPH. I'd be interested in knowing what it is.

If the sound is present at different RPM's (speed dependent), I would check tires and possibly the flex discs on the drive shaft. If you can isolate to a corner of the car, it is probably a tire. If it feels like it is under uranus, than it could be a flex disc. I think there is two on a W210. I have not changed one yet, but I have heard they have a tendency to get soft over time. A slight sag in one could give you a resonating sound at a certain speed range.

Is it harmonic?
Hi or low frequency?
Speed or RPM dependant?
On acceleration or deceleration?
Once you hear it, if you put the car in N: Is it still there?
Do you "feel" the noise?
Is your exhaust/muffler in good condition?

Depending on the answers could be, among other things:

Roller bearings
Flex discs
Differential mounts
Motor mounts
Trans mounts
Shaft balance or central bearing
Tires/wheels
Rotors
Exhaust hole
